The ten-channel video installation Eye to Eye, recipient of the Special Prize of the Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions 2023 Commission Project and the Kimura Ihei Photography Award, explores encounters that begin by looking beyond the attributes and backgrounds assigned to individuals. The work features the children and community of Colégio Sant’Ana in Shiga Prefecture, a school attended by Brazilian children living in Japan. Since 2022, a long-term project has aimed to create opportunities for these children—who have limited access to the surrounding society due to linguistic and cultural differences—to connect with their local communities.

Together with the horizontal video works Side:A and Side:B, which offer glimpses into daily life at Colégio Sant’Ana, the installation includes eight vertical video portraits measuring two meters in height, forming a ten-channel composition. These works are currently presented in the exhibition Untranslatable Words at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (April 18–July 7).

Presented in this exhibition, Side:C is a new work comprising photographic pieces and a five-channel video installation. Set on the day the Colégio Sant’Ana community traveled overnight by bus from Shiga to the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, the work depicts the individuals of the school as they confront and reflect upon themselves. This “Journey from Sant’Ana to Tokyo” was made possible through the generous support of those who wished to encourage the children, and it also became an occasion for nine curators from Japan and Korea to encounter the Colégio Sant’Ana community. Following their experience of the installation, participants joined an exchange event in which they explored public artworks in Shibuya together. The photographic works represent the extended-family-like community formed through Kim Insook’s long-term project.

A monitor in the exhibition screens an interview documenting the development and conceptual foundation of the work created for the Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions 2023 Commission Project. Visitors are invited to move between Untranslatable Words and this exhibition to experience Eye to Eye within a broader perspective.

恵比寿映像祭2023コミッション・プロジェクト特別賞および木村伊兵衛写真賞を受賞した10チャンネル・ヴィデオ・インスタレーション《Eye to Eye》は、人が持つ属性や背景にとらわれず、見つめ合うことから始まる出逢いを表現している。
作品には、滋賀県に移住したブラジル人の子どもたちが通うサンタナ学園の人々が登場する。言葉や文化の違いにより、地域社会に触れる機会が少ない環境で暮らす子どもたちと地域社会をつなぐ契機をつくるためのプロジェクトを、2022年から継続して行ってきた。

サンタナ学園の様子を垣間見ることができる横型の映像作品《Side:A》《Side:B》と、2mの縦型ヴィデオポートレート8面で構成される10チャンネル・ヴィデオ・インスタレーションは、4月18日〜7月7日に東京都現代美術館で開催中の「翻訳できない わたしの言葉」展で発表している。

本展で発表する《Side:C》は、写真と5チャンネル・ヴィデオ・インスタレーションで構成された新作である。滋賀から夜行バスに乗って東京都写真美術館へやってきた日を舞台に、作品の中では、自分自身と見つめ合うサンタナ学園の人々の姿が映し出される。“サンタナ学園・東京への旅”は、彼らを応援する人々の支援によって奇跡的に実現した。日韓から9名のキュレーターとサンタナ学園の出会いの場ともなり、美術館でインスタレーションを鑑賞した後には、渋谷のパブリックアートを探す交流イベントも行われた。写真作品は、金仁淑のプロジェクトに参加した、大家族のようなコミュニティの集合体を表している。
